The Best Lake in Cottage Country
The Best Lake in Cottage Country
Cottage country in Ontario encompasses a vast area. Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands are popular cottage areas north east of Toronto whereas “Muskoka”, what I call “cottage country” is more central just north of the GTA. Further north from here you will find the Algonquin Highlands and the Almaguin Highlands, all beautiful areas and I cannot say a negative thing about any of them although admittedly my heart is in Muskoka. Muskoka is Ontario’s most popular summer vacation destination highly sought after by CEO’s, presidents of large corporations, doctors, lawyers, professional athletes, celebrities and us common folk alike.
So what is the Best Lake?
I get asked this question a lot. My general answer is: the lake your cottage is on! But what if you don’t have that cottage yet or your family dynamics have changed, you may have no idea where to start your search. There are many different lakes which suit the various needs of cottagers.
Perhaps you are looking to play a game at one of the areas golf clubs, dine out by boat meeting friends along the way or enjoy a long day of boating including wake boarding, wake surfing, tubing or water skiing. For busy families being on one the Big 3 lakes: Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau or Joseph would be perfect and as the children grow into young adults there is plenty to keep them occupied. And the plus is I can still find you locations on these waters where you will have your privacy; although keep in mind, “having it all” will cost you more than being on a perimeter lake.
Some of the areas smaller, perimeter lakes are extremely beautiful. Easily accessible Bruce Lake, the crystal clear waters of Skeleton Lake and the chain of Clear, Whitefish and Little Whitefish Lakes all make excellent choices for cottagers starting out, downsizing or wanting more cottage and/or frontage and acreage for their money than what can be found on the big three lakes. Not to mention some of the small outer lakes are great for getting away from it all. Completely unplug, have fun kayaking and fishing, or spend countless lazy hours in the sun simply relaxing and rejuvenating. Looking for even more bang for your buck? Consider an island property!
I can’t honestly say there is one lake that is “better” than the others. The Muskoka region boasts large lakes and small lakes as well as everything in between. Some lakes are quite populated with active owner associations, regattas every summer, family day BBQ’s plus golf clubs, children’s camps, marinas and restaurants accessible by boat. These are the best for the family that loves to be busy. On the other hand we have quiet locations on smaller lakes where you can spend a whole week without speaking to another person. From fantastic fishing opportunities to perfect wake boarding lakes there is something for everyone within Muskoka Lakes.
As you can tell by now, the bottom line is that the best lake in Cottage Country is the one that meets all YOUR criteria. And the best way to find that lake is to entrust the service of a knowledgeable, reputable, experienced local REALTOR®. My existing buyers and I have developed trusting relationships therefore I have learned their family dynamics and what type of property they will be happiest with. For new buyers I have designed a one page questionnaire which helps them prioritize their wants and needs thereby assisting me in locating the perfect property. This eliminates time wasted looking at unsuitable listings and gets straight to the best options out there. We are all busy people so driving or boating to properties that don’t meet your needs is just a waste of time. So let’s talk about your next Muskoka move! Have a great weekend!
