Springtime in Muskoka

Spring has finally sprung in Muskoka cottage country. Buds are popping, contractors and landscapers are hopping as they ready cottage properties for the season. Muskoka lakes ice is almost gone and while flooding is always a concern this time of year the current levels appear to have been lowered enough to support the melting.

Blackflies will be out soon, and they will be hungry. Jack’s rule of thumb - when the trilliums are in full bloom the blackflies are in feeding mode!

What’s Going on Muskoka

Saturday, May 19th is the official kick-off of MLA summer member events. A Water Quality Training Session is being held at the Port Carling Community Centre from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

May 19th is also MLA Seedling Day and members can pick up their pre-ordered seedlings at the Community Centre until noon. Seedlings can be ordered until May 6th by clicking here.

New to Port Carling

LCBO - a new, temporary, seasonal LCBO retail outlet will be located at the corner of Hwy 118 and Peninsula Road in Port Carling. This trailer will provide a small selection of products. Council hopes the second location will help relieve congestion at Port Carling’s downtown LCBO location.

The Locks - construction continues as the gates at the Port Carling large locks couldn’t be repaired and must be replaced. The good news is, we are getting new traffic lights at Tim Horton corner.

Muskoka Politics

The Minett Resort Development is currently on hold.  The Township of Muskoka Lakes council unanimously voted to recommend to District Planning Committee that a joint and in-depth review of the site official plan policies for the Resort Village of Minett be initiated.

Another ongoing discussion is being had around the proposed demolition of a traditional ‘Muskoka-style’ cottage and boathouse and erecting in its place a modern, white, shiny glass cottage and boathouse. Gravenhurst council continues to receive numerous complaints. A public meeting was held last month which addressed concerns about the character and scale of this development. This has gone so far as to catch the attention of the Cottage Life Magazine.
