Help Prevent Resort Over-Development in Muskoka

During peak cottage season, our Muskoka lakes are bustling. On weekends from May 24 through till Thanksgiving and week long in July and August. Paddle boarders, kayakers and canoe enthusiasts share the pristine waters with wakeboarders, water-skiers and wake surfers. Muskoka residents, cottage owners, renters and holiday goers at resorts such as Sherwood Inn, Clevelands House and Red Leaves are all enjoying Muskoka cottage life.

We know why! Our clean lakes and stunning views are a magnet for visitors from around the globe.

Over the years we’ve seen an increase in traffic on the roads and on the lakes. We are still getting used to this influx while managing to enjoy the lakes despite the additional noise. Above water exhaust boats, jet-skis, flyboarding and wake-surfing. The peace and tranquility of Muskoka cottage country is in peril.

The District of Muskoka is considering a policy change that will result in an alarming increase in the number of condos and residential communities on the Muskoka waterfront. This would change Muskoka forever. And not for the better.

Organizations such as our MLA (Muskoka Lakes Association) and Safe Quiet Lakes are working to create awareness about these issues. But they need our support.

Developers are trying to take advantage of our lakefront commercial property zoning. They are attempting to rezone for high density developments. Such rezoning would allow them to build many units on a single property with necessary docking to support large numbers of inhabitants. I don’t need to tell you the catastrophic impact this will have on the eco-system.

You may be aware of the project already underway on the former Lakeside Lodge site. It’s marketing 43 "cottage" units on a 470’ frontage lot with large docking systems and boat slips.

“Make no mistake: developers are watching and hoping to do similar projects if this change goes through. We could see new, high density residential development all over Muskoka, on big lakes and small.” Says the MLA.  There are always two sides. It can be argued that these types of developments will bring jobs to the region, but at what cost?
