What is a Boathouse Lease Agreement?
Cottage owners are required to have a lease agreement with the Government for having their boathouse over Crown Land. There is a fee that is billed yearly which varies for each property owner.
Basically, if you have a boathouse with a second story or with living quarters over Crown Land then occupational authority and the payment of an annual rent is required.
One factor which should be acknowledged when purchasing waterfront recreational property is whether the land and water under the boathouse is privately owned or retained by the Government.
Most of the properties in our cottage country of Muskoka and surrounding area are already paying a lease or have already purchased the land underneath the living space portion of the boathouse.
Boat houses with no living space are not required to have a lease agreement with MNR.
