Spring Flood Potential Muskoka Lakes
Muskoka Braces for Another Year of Flooding
Although the Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA) has been actively requesting the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) to anticipate and mitigate flooding by lowering the lake levels earlier and to a greater extent than in the past - nothing has changed. The issue of flooding seems to be a constant news topic.
With heavy snowfall earlier in the year along with mild temperatures in January and February creating melting conditions there is increased risk of flooding. In fact, only a prolonged period of cold, dry weather will allow lake water to be lowered to target levels.
The MLA has released another informative report which you can access here.
As a Member of the MLA and Lake Joseph resident I feel it is my duty to share this information with you so that together we may work towards preventing future flooding. The MLA will likely call upon us to join them in helping press Queens Park to get the update process started.
Please see the full report for more details on the process and situation in general. In the meantime, all we can do is be prepared for potential flooding. Some tips on protecting your property and boathouse can be found here.
The Province of Ontario updates its flood map regularly.
